Where Have We Been
An ongoing project rooted in Iceland, past and present.
The intention for the close future is to reconnect with some of the people photographed back then, and to create new images that speak to who they are now, years later. By placing past and present images next to each other, the project will looks at how youth, culture, and identity changed over time, for them and for me. To this end, the project will also include written and recorded conversations, following the threads of a few individuals within a culture often reduced to landscape and travel imagery.
This work is in its early elaboration stage and should come to fruition around 2027-2028.
This project stems from time spent in Iceland in my mid-twenties, living alongside a group of young Icelanders and photographing daily life from the inside rather than from the more common place perspective of a tourist. The images shown here were made during that period and form the starting point of this new project. They reflect a moment before Iceland became as heavily mediated and touristic as it is today. They also carry the spirit of my own youthful uncertainties and excitment.
